First Fridays wanted me to design a poster that advertised the experience of First Fridays as opposed to just advertising the galleries. This design first addresses the issue that not everyone know’s what First Fridays is. I hope to do another poster later on in the summer that is a bit more graphic and less text heavy. But I think this one captures the essence of the event. So, if anyone is looking for something free to do in these tough economic times, a cheap date, or to purchase some local art, visit the open galleries and studios the first Friday of every month.

I’m constantly concerned with the idea of producing affordable art but trying to figure out how to retain a sense of originality per piece. It’s difficult. But silkscreening is a medium that may provide the ability to produce art in a limited run but each piece still retains some originality. So we’ll see if I actually invest the time and MONEY into relearning this skill. But here’s a great tutorial of silkscreening at home…

Fonts are like heroine to the graphic designer. And any chance to get their hands on some stuff for free will turn any designer into a compulsive freak. Especially the chance to get good stuff for free. Jos Buivenga is the designer of some great fonts and is giving most of them away for free. I highly recommend supporting him by purchasing some of his faces from MyFonts.com. They’re only $9.95.

I’m working on building a new site called Indie SC. It’s a collaboration between me and Teresa Roche from Art & Light. Basically it’s a design blog that features the art and artists of South Carolina. It’s in the process of building and testing so be looking for it soon! And if you’re an artist and would like to be featured, email me at marco@indiesc.com.

I came across this photographer who creates images underwater. These are beautiful shots that capture the imaginative essence of children. They remind me of a Sigur Ros video. Very beautiful and almost freeing from the depressing state of economy right now.

I’m very fortunate to have some very talented and busy friends. Here’s 2 that never complain about having nothing to do.

First off, Dailey Crafton is a good friend that is tearing up Brooklyn, NY. I love his new line of lino cuts. Check them out at his design shop.

Alison Storm is another great friend who was featured recently on one of my favorite blogs, Design*Sponge.
