So I’m going to expose just how behind I am on things and blog about The Satorialist. A really really interesting site by photographer, Scott Schumann. I love these unassuming moments he captures every day. But what really struck me was this video of him explaining what he does. I love hearing how an artist arrives at doing what they do.

Fabien Barral

Fabien Barral is a design from France who single handedly got me passionate about design. He has been my biggest influence. He curates a design blog I visit daily called graphic-exchange. Recently he created some amazing pieces of artwork that have been printed on fabric to use in a hotel in Paris. I’ve got to visit this hotel.

Too Much

The age of art appearing, for lack of a better term, half-assed is at full steam right now. Stores like Urban Outfitters have meticulous and creative art installations made of out cheap crappy materials along with their thrift-store worthy clothing. But it is all intentional and creatively beautiful. I guess it is another avenue art is to explore. All arts are running in the vein of cheap, temporary, and half-assed these days and who better to lead the cutting edge than Sufjan Stevens. There are plenty of reviews of his new album, but I want to feature the video for his song Too Much. This video has that poorly made quality but is too mesmerizing to look away from. I love it!

October/November Font Love

Sackers Light Classic Roman looks like a bland font but it has a lot to offer. It has a great elegant vintage look. I really Love the P and R.

Rooney is another example of how the type of font you use can speak as much as the words it’s writing. This font screams homemade local bakery. The fact that the serifs are so rounded gives a very non-threatening welcoming appearance. Almost like your grandma. The bold face is a bit too rounded for my taste, but the italic is very very nice.

Affair is an absolutely beautiful script with loads of options. This script does not sacrifice legibility for interest. Every letter gives you several swash options to create beautiful graphics like this. It is pricey though, $99, but is worth it if you find the right application.

Vitesse is a font I didn’t know if I should feature, It’s a font from H&FJ and featuring one of their fonts is like saying a sunset is pretty. No duh. It is one of their obscurer fonts though, with Archer, Cyclone, and Gotham hogging the spotlight. Which is too bad because this is a very nice and very versatile font. Like I said before, if a font can be used in a logotype and be used in copy, buy it. Not very many can do that and this can. Just check out that lowercase n. A thing of beauty. Extremely well balanced. Not sure how H&FJ can have such an awesome artillery of fonts, but they do. Good job guys.

September Font Love

Ok, so it’s the second to last day in September, so it’s not too late to do this month’s font love.

Geotica is getting its limelight right now and I’ll add to it. Brought to you by the same dude who created Museo, the web nerds favorite font, this whimsical and feminine font comes in many weights and faces but my favorite is the open. Seen here as “WOW”.

Carrosserie plays to the nostalgia of the early 1900′s. I love this font because it holds a lot of weight but it also somewhat condensed. I tend toward fonts with a low waist. Notice the crossbar of the A or the middle bar of the E. This font only comes in an uppercase version so its only application would be for display not copy. I would really love to see a lowercase version as well. Hopefully that’s in the works.

I’m in love with Livory. I haven’t been this in love with a serif font since Mrs Eaves. Elegant, quirky, simple, yet nuanced, this font is perfect for display, headlines, copy, whatever. It reads well at a small point size and yet could even be used for a logotype. So in other words, buy it.

Adelle says it all, a multi-purpose slab serif that comes in 12 weights and many open-type features. Open type features means that you can change the relationship that letters have with their neighbors, also known as ligatures.

Dolan Geiman
