I experienced Matthew Wahl’s work after attending the New Attitude conference in ‘07. His work for Sovereign Grace Ministries is outstanding. There’s a big difference between reacting to trends and creating them. I still see myself as one who still reacts. I haven’t gotten to the point where I am comfortable with my knowledge and skill to create without first looking to cheat off my neighbor. I believe Matthew Wahl is one of the few designers who has risen above the waves of trends. I am going nuts over this new font of his. If only I could get my grubby hands on it….wait….was I just reacting?

everything has some element that’s borrowed. whether you do it consciously or not, all of your work is in some way informed by something you’ve seen somewhere before. and that’s ok. only God can create out of nothing.

in fact, i think if you can recognize the sources of your borrowing, you can wield it better.

Very true. Obviously all art is from inspiration. And there’s nothing new under the sun. But take the font Porcelain for example. It was a great font created by MisPrinted Type. Slowly people started grabbing it and using it. Then it was everywhere, on t-shirts in The Buckle and eventually made its way to Target. I want to get to the point where I’m not one of those people who grab the font and start using it. But I want to be the one to create it. There’s a difference between a trendsetter and trend follower.

I hope that’s not too overly ambitious.

it’s not. i totally feel you on that one. it’s the reason i just don’t use type ornament sets anymore. i create my own ornaments. i still have to “borrow” from nature to get proper fronds and flourishes, but yeah, i like my stuff to be as “unpoached” as possible too.
